The Turnstone a migrant from the ARTIC, visiting New Zealand every year in their thousands. We spotted these birds on the Kaikoura Peninsula.
After the recent massive 7.8Mag earthquake that up lifted the coast in Kaikoura by up to 5m in parts. These birds now have a whole new playground to search for food in. (The seaweed in this picture used to be underwater all the time)

Walking along the beach recently we bumped into Tuturiwhatu the Endemic Banded Dotterel.
Their camouflage is extremely cryptic set against the stone beaches, them almost disappear from sight. As we watched quietly a TINY dotterel chick popped out from behind a small stone and ran towards it's parent.
Now you see me now you don't 🙂 as the chick hurried to hide under the adults plumage.

The Pied stilt is a funny bird , with its long pink legs and two toned black and white plumage. They are very vocal almost sounding like they are constantly laughing at one another . As a small very dainty bird they do become very aggressive during the breeding season. We've seen they chasing away much larger Harrier hawks and have been targets ourselves of angry parents, which is always a fun time. It is like being attacked by a butterfly for example.

The Black-browed Mollymawk is a rare native, with around 150pairs breeding on the New Zealand Sub-antarctic islands of the Antipodes and Snares. They have a wing span of up to 2.4metres!
This was an inquisitive and friendly bird, extremely healthy and well groomed , a very graceful bird.
