Amongst the rugged mountain ranges of the South Island of New Zealand, surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea, Kakariki Avitours was born. Born to provide our guests with a unique experience of New Zealand’s native flora and fauna. Birding is in the blood at Kakariki Avitours and a lifetime’s worth of knowledge is available for guests on our birding and nature tours. Our team of local kiwi guides have decades of experience with New Zealand’s wildlife flora and fauna having spent many years in the great outdoors.

Leading tour Guide Hamish has a background in environmental science and outdoor recreation. His started birding as a young boy on his family farm near Kaikoura. With a plethora of wildlife surrounding the farm, it was only natural that he and his father Richard took interest in bird life.

Hamish still remembers when, at 10 years old he and his father Richard spotted and photographed a Fantailed Cookoo. They are the only photos of the bird to have ever be taken in New Zealand, a very rare migrant from Australia. Hamish’s passion continues today with a friendly attitude, providing guests with his insight into New Zealand’s wild landscapes and the creatures that live here. The Kakariki Avitours vision is to provide our guests with an exciting yet relaxing and informative birding and nature tour through the picturesque and scenic Te Waipounamu (New Zealand’s South Island).
